The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), which employs longer infrared wavelengths to cut through dust particles that absorb or scatter shorter wavelengths, also captured images of the area.

This revealed never-before-seen spots of light within the stellar nursery, suggesting protostars that are still developing mass. It also dimmed the hot stars and defined the frigid areas.

Due to the Tarantula Nebula’s chemical resemblance to the massive star-forming areas seen a few billion years after the Big Bang, at the time known as “cosmic noon,” when star formation was at its zenith, the nebula has attracted astronomical interest.

The tarantula is a plainly detectable example of this thriving phase of cosmic creation, located only 161,000 light-years away.
